Tempranillo is the largest red grape variety in Spanish wine

Tempranillo is a native Spanish red grape variety (there is also a white Tempranillo produced by a natural mutation of the red Tempranillo variety). Tempranillo is the third largest red grape variety in the world, and the largest red grape variety in Spanish wine.

It is an early-ripening grape variety with thick skins that produces dark, aromatic wines. It tends to be planted in limestone rich soils. Because of its compact clusters and susceptibility to powdery mildew, Tempranillo tends to do well in dry production areas. The wines made from Dampu often have a distinct aroma of red fruits such as red plums and red cherries. As they age, they easily show aromas of leather, caramel, dried fruit, coffee, etc. Temperatures from warm producing regions also show aromas of black fruits such as black brioche and black cherries.
